The Best Caffeine Free Pre Workout – Be Free!!

With all of the posts on this website about the benefits of Caffeine in pre workouts, I thought that I should step back for a moment and research something for those of you that don’t want or can’t have Caffeine in their pre workout.

There are many reasons why some can’t have or prefer not to have Caffeine.  Whatever your reason is to avoid this ingredient, this post will educate you to make better choices regarding Caffeine Free supplements.

I’ve had a few recurring issues with Caffeine myself over the years.  Thank God this doesn’t lead to any permanent effects.  There have been many times drinking way too much coffee in the morning because I was stressed or nervous about the day.  This never works out very well for me.  It results in more stress, more nervousness, anxiety and the jitters.caffeine-sleep

My other brainless thoughts are that I need to take twice the amount of pre workout supplements than I should, so I can have twice the performance during my workout.  Not only does this not help with my workout, but I spend most of the night awake.  Sleep plays a vital role in mental stability and muscle building.

These are just examples for over consuming Caffeine, but we will get into some of the more important reasons to avoid it.  You may also be interested in the many positive and negative aspects that come from Caffeine, so we will discuss this breifly.

We will research the different forms and names that Caffeine can take, so you will be able to identify these ingredients on the product “supplemental facts” label to be able to avoid them.

Because Caffeine Free pre workouts (sometimes called Stim-Free) are a more specialized category, it can be more difficult to find the right one since there are less options available.  However, good stimulant free pre workouts do exist.  Therefore, I will be critiquing the best Caffeine Free pre workout that I can find.

Reasons for not Consuming Caffeine

The most prominent reason that someone would need a pre workout without Caffeine is because of Caffeine sensitivity.  This is usually determined by genetics or by the livers ability to process Caffeine.  There are different levels of Caffeine sensitivity that can range from normal to hypersensitivity.side-effects-pre-workout

The side effects for someone that is Caffeine sensitive are nausea, racing heart, nervousness, jitters and insomnia.

Some have what is called a “Caffeine allergy” .  Basically, your body mistakes the Caffeine molecules for an “enemy” to your body’s immune system.  Some people don’t even know that they are susceptible to this until later on in life.

People with Caffeine allergies can have even worse effects, with swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing and breaking out in hives.

There are those that don’t want to consume Caffeine because it is a highly addictive drug.  For some, once you become accustomed, quitting is very difficult.  The last reason for staying away from Caffeine is that they just don’t like the feeling.

coffee-pre-workoutJust so you know where you stand with Caffeine, an average cup of coffee contains between 80-100mg.  A person with a normal tolerance can safely average between 200 and 300mg per day.

This happens to be the average range of Caffeine in one serving of a pre workout.  Keep a sharp eye on the ingredients, because some pre workout supplements can have as much as 400mg or more per serving.

If you have a different reason for going Caffeine Free or any other suggestions about Caffeine, please leave a comment in the box at the bottom of the post.

Don’t be Fooled by Substituted Names Given to Caffeine

caffeine-pre workoutSome of these examples are chemical ingredients and others are naturally derived products, but all are forms of Caffeine.  Here is the list:  Caffeine Anhydrous, Caffeine Citrate, Trymethylpurine, Green Tea, Teacrine, Matcha, guaranine, matein and methyltheobromine.

It’s crazy that companies will disguise Caffeine with these other names.  Beware of pre workouts fakes.  Many brands will advertise “stimulant free” pre workouts to trick you into thinking it does not contain Caffeine.  Be sure to read the supplement label.

The Positives of Caffeine

The most obvious benefit of Caffeine is it’s convenience and the quick energy that it brings.  Caffeine in pre workouts brings not only more energy, but increases motivation and focus.

women-pre-workoutStudies have also shown that a certain amount of Caffeine can be good for you.  If you can handle it this ingredient, it will give you the energy, better perfomance and increased stamina during your workout.

Caffeine can also be beneficial for weight loss, since it naturally increases your metabolism and helps to burn more calories.

The Negatives of Caffeine

The obvious negatives would be, if you are Caffeine sensitive or have a Caffeine allergy.caffeine-pre-workout

Even though studies suggest that some Caffeine can be good for you, there are also many benefits by staying away from in the first place.  Caffeine can increase your blood pressure, decrease sleep, dampen your mood, raise anxiety and cause stomach discomfort.  Caffeine is defined as a drug, so most people that quit consuming it will go through Caffeine withdraws.

Women may have a lower tolerance to Caffeine due to their lighter weight and a different metabolism than men.  Here is a post on What is the Best Pre Workout Supplements for Women.

Ingredients Needed in the Best Caffeine Free Pre Workouts

The fact that Caffeine Free pre workouts are missing this key ingredient, they will require having other active ingredients to make up for the Caffeine effects.

L-citrulline and Nitric Oxide

A pre workout needs maximize your blood flow to keep your muscles from getting tired without the help of Caffeine. L-citrulline (an Amino Acid) will help with this by manufacturing a Nitric Oxide, thus creating an energy boost.  Combined with Bela Alanine, these ingredients will help to reduce muscle fatigue.

B Vitamins and Other Nutrients

Most of us know that B vitamins are good for energy.  A good pre workout will provide vitamins B1 – B12.   Niacin, Riboflavin and Theanine are some of the other names for B vitamins.  Pre workouts also provide other nutrients that will come into play to prevent fatigue mid workout.

Amino Acids and BCAA’s

These are the important Amino Acids to a Caffeine Free pre workout:  L-Citrulline (previously mentioned), N-acetyl, L-tyrosine, L-arginine, Taurine, Glutamine and Betaine.  These Amino Acids play a role in improving strength and endurance.  Amino Acids are the building blocks of protein because they boost muscle protein synthesis.  BCAA’s know as branch chain Amino Acids are also part of this group of proteins to help in fueling your workout

Creatine

Creatine can play a major role in a pre workout that doesn’t contain Caffeine to increase strength and build muscle.  Studies are starting to show that Caffeine actually counteracts Creatine’s positive muscle building effects in a pre workout.  Here is my post on the positives and negatives of Creatine.

  1. Hello! Thanks for including where to get these products, at the cheapest price! Usually, people put the most expensive option.
The paragraph that talks about how caffeine isn’t good for you speak to me. I drink a lot of coffee, because of the energy benefits. But sometimes I find I get a headache from too much caffeine. I didn’t know that women processed caffeine differently, but that makes sense due to gender’s different muscle masses.
Thanks for the interesting article! Brooke
