Ancient Nutrition Collagen Review – Overview

Ancient Nutrition was founded by a certified doctor of natural medicine, Dr. Axe.  This nutritional supplement company source only the highest quality ingredients.  Then they are tested for purity, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, and unhealthy products.

Their mission statement is “to restore health, strength, and vitality by providing history’s healthiest whole food nutrients to the modern world because we believe the human body was built for high performance”.

Ancient Nutrition is known for its protein powders, vitamins and minerals, probiotics, and herbs.

The multi collagen and collagen bone broth protein powders are the biggest selling protein supplements in the Ancient Nutrition product line.

Collagen is the most abundant protein found in the body and makes up 30–40% of the body’s total protein.  Collagen’s ancient meaning is “glue” because collagen is the glue that holds our bodies together.

This protein is one of the major building blocks of bones, muscles, skin, tendons, and ligaments.  It’s important to get a well rounded source of collagen, from Type I through Type V.

Natural collagen production slows down with age, so this can be the most important time to supplement this nutrient.

What To Look for in Collagen Protein Powders

Ancient Nutrition Collagen Review - me looking at ancient nutrition ingredientsFinding a quality collagen protein powder to suit your needs may be difficult.  There are many different brands on the market with certain benefits and at various price points.

Quantity of Protein

Depending on your physical goals, you will want the proper amount of protein.

For general health, nutrition and weight management, 8-15 grams per serving is sufficient.

If you’re a weightlifter who’s goal is to pack on the most muscle mass, you will need 25-30 grams of protein per serving.

All Natural Ingredients

Those of us that use collagen protein powders tend to take better care of our bodies and watch more closely what we eat.

Therefore, it is important to look for an “all natural” collagen product.  This means no artificial flavors, colors, or sugars.  A powder containing no man-made chemicals, pesticides, or fertilizers is also recommended.

Smooth Digestion

Collagen protein powders should be easily digestible.  If not, there is a possibility of an uncomfortable stomach, bloating, or gas.  It might be a good idea to read any customer reviews to make sure that this is not an occurring problem.

Ancient Nutrition Collagen Review

I choose the multi collagen since this one includes collagen types I, II, III, V, and X.  It means that it covers all of the possible benefits that one can get from a collagen protein powder.

My reason for trying this powder is for muscle recovery and to keep healthy skin.  Collagen is recommended to minimize damage for sun exposure.  Another reason that I like this powder is that it will help to stay lean.

At only 35 calories per serving, I won’t have to worry about any unnecessary weight gain.  This number of calories is the lowest that I’ve seen for this type of powder.

Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen Protein Powder is an all natural product containing just pure protein.  No fillers or artificial ingredients.  Even the small amount of flavor and sweetener is made from natural products.

The multi collagen comes in chocolate, vanilla, cold brew, and unflavored.  I couldn’t get up the guts to try the unflavored, so I went with the vanilla.  The serving size is two scoops, so I took a bit more than this because of my weight and am fairly active.

My collagen protein powder mixed well with my unsweetened vanilla almond milk (though water will work), and it went down easily.  Fortunately, it didn’t give me any stomach issues, gas, or any other negative side effects.

Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen Ingredients

As you can see from above, the Ancient Nutrition ingredients are only the essential ones and with no fillers.  Only pure collagen protein.

Pictured above is the vanilla flavored option.  This is a natural flavoring with a natural zero calorie sweetener.  The 35 calories per serving are extremely low for this amount of protein.

Listed is the breakdown for the sources of collagen found in this supplement.

Ancient Nutrition Collagen Review - cup of protein powderHow to Take Ancient Nutrition Collagen

Most collagen protein supplements come in the more popular powder form, but they are also available in capsules.  The powder is very water soluble and doesn’t gel.

It can be mixed with water, almond milk, or in any type of smoothie.  Be sure to follow the individual directions for proper quantities.

It’s not recommended to use a collagen protein more than twice a day.  Try to get the rest of your nutrients from well balanced meals.

Collagen protein powders can be taken at any time of the day.  However, there are different benefits associated with using this supplement at different times.  These include first thing in the morning for breakfast, before sleep, an afternoon snack, or post workout for muscle recovery.

If you have any questions or comments on how much or when to take protein powder, please leave a message at the bottom and I will respond.

Collagen Safety

Collagen is perfectly safe to take as a protein supplement.  There may be some that have a collagen sensitivity, but it is rare.  Collagen is derived from animal sources in case you are allergic to these.  Possible allergic reactions could include nausea, heartburn, diarrhea, skin reactions, or headaches.

Obviously, these powders are not meant for a vegan diet.  Collagen is not known to have reactions with any foods, drugs, or other supplements.  If you have any doubts, be sure to consult with a healthcare professional prior to use.

Ancient Nutrition Collagen Options

Besides the “multi collagen”, there are two other Ancient Nutrition bestsellers, Keto collagen and bone broth collagen protein.

Bone Broth and Bone Broth Protein typically contain collagen from one source, that being, either chicken or beef bone broth.

This means that you will be getting more collagen type II which contains higher amounts of hyaluronic acid and chondroitin.

It comes in a variety of flavors.  The Ancient Nutrition bone broth option contains more protein per serving at 20 grams.  This makes it more beneficial for building muscle mass.

This is an essential blend for people that want a true Paleo protein.  It’s a cost effective way to get the most effective protein without eating meat.

  1. Purchased the Multi Collagen Protein, actually 2 455g jars. I’m having some nausea and diarrhea 🙈
I’m wondering if this will pass after I’m taking it for a few weeks? I’ve used Naka collagen and had no problems!
I wanted to try this product as I hear so much about it.

    • Mary,

      Their website says this:

Yes. For most people, collagen is perfectly safe to take as a supplement, and it is even typically labeled as GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe).

That said, some individuals can have collagen sensitivity, particularly when the collagen is derived from animal sources the individual may be allergic to. However, for most people, collagen supplements are safe to consumer. Of course, you should always look at the label for ingredient sources as well as for any allergen information. Likewise, you should always consult your health professional prior to starting any dietary supplement regimen.

However, it may take a couple of times for your body to adjust, so definitely try that. If there are still problems, I would take it back and try one of their similar products.
